Former UFC light heavyweight champion Magomed Ankalaev has his next is expected to headline UFC Abu Dhabi on July 25 when he faces dangerous striker Khalil Rountree Jr. at Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. The co-main event will feature another Dagestani contender in Umar Nurmagomedov who faces rising contender David Martinez in a key bantamweight matchup.

The matchup was first reported by Russian MMA outlet VestnikMMA before being backed up by additional reports.

Both fighters enter the bout looking to rebound after losses at UFC 320 last October.

Ankalaev Looking To Rebuild After Pereira Defeat

After falling short against Alex Pereira in their UFC 320 rematch, Magomed Ankalaev is finally set to make his return to the Octagon. Pereira reclaimed the belt with a quick stoppage victory, finishing Ankalaev just 80 seconds into the fight.

The 33-year-old later revealed he dealt with broken ribs during training camp and claimed he spent more than a month without training before the title fight. Still, questions remain after the one-sided defeat.

A victory in Abu Dhabi would immediately place Ankalaev back into the conversation at 205 pounds. Fighting in the Middle East could also provide a favorable environment as he attempts to restart his climb toward another title opportunity.

Rountree Still Dangerous Despite Recent Losses

Rountree heads into the matchup after suffering a knockout loss to former champion Jiri Prochazka at UFC 320.

The veteran contender has gone 1-2 across his last three UFC appearances, but those defeats came against Pereira and Prochazka, two of the division’s most dangerous finishers.

Before that stretch, Rountree built serious momentum with five consecutive victories. During that run, he collected three Performance of the Night bonuses and established himself as one of the division’s most explosive strikers.

His aggressive style and knockout power could create problems for Ankalaev if the fight turns into a stand-up battle.

High Stakes At Light Heavyweight

The UFC light heavyweight division remains crowded with contenders chasing another shot at Pereira. Ankalaev and Rountree both understand the importance of this matchup heading into Abu Dhabi.

A main event win could quickly push either fighter back toward the top of the rankings in one of the UFC’s most competitive divisions.
