Demetrious Johnson sees a dangerous challenge waiting for newly established UFC flyweight champion Joshua Van, and it may not be the opponent many expected.
Van successfully defended his title at UFC 328. He managed to survive Taira’s relentless grappling exchanges and TKO Tatsuro Taira in the fifth round.. The bout instantly elevated Van’s reputation as one of the most exciting champions in the sport.
While many fans are focused on a potential rematch with Alexandre Pantoja, Johnson believes another contender could create bigger problems for the reigning champion.
That fighter is Kyoji Horiguchi.
Johnson Praises Horiguchi’s Discipline and Fight IQ
During a recent breakdown on his YouTube channel, Johnson explained why Horiguchi stands out among the top names in the flyweight division.
“I think Kyoji Horiguchi is more seasoned than Tatsuro, (he) doesn’t have grappling like Tatsuro, but has a more direct game plan.”
Johnson believes Horiguchi’s ability to stay disciplined during fights separates him from many contenders.
“Kyoji Horiguchi is really good about following the game plan, and executing it.”
The former UFC champion also referenced Horiguchi’s rivalry with Kai Asakura in Japan as an example of his adjustments and tactical growth.
“You look at when he fought Kai Asakura in Japan, Kai Asakura starched him the first time they fought.”
“The second time, Kyoji finished Asakura because he just kept kicking his legs. Was able to knock out Kai with just leg kicks.”
“Very exciting time to watch the flyweight division!”
Flyweight Division Continues to Heat Up
Van’s title reign has quickly created fresh intrigue at 125 pounds. Along with Pantoja and Horiguchi, contenders like Manel Kape remain firmly in the mix.
Horiguchi is scheduled to face Kape next month at the UFC Apex in a matchup expected to determine the next title challenger.
Johnson and Horiguchi previously shared the Octagon at UFC 186, where Johnson secured a fifth-round armbar finish in their championship fight.
Now, years later, Johnson believes his former rival could become the biggest obstacle standing between Van and a lengthy flyweight title reign.
