Carlos Prates is already thinking beyond a UFC welterweight title shot. The rising contender wants championship gold first, then a blockbuster showdown with Ilia Topuria afterward.

Prates continued his rapid rise earlier this month when he stopped Jack Della Maddalena in the third round at UFC Perth. The finish extended his streak of knockout victories and strengthened his position near the top of the welterweight division.

Following the win, Prates made it clear he believes a title opportunity is next, and DC seems to agree.

Prates Confident UFC Title Fight Is Coming

The Brazilian contender said he expects Islam Makhachev and Ian Machado Garry to meet for the welterweight championship. He also believes the UFC already hinted at his role afterward. Prates told Yahoo Sports:

“I think Ian’s gonna fight Makhachev, and I’m going to fight the winner.”

Prates added that the opponent does not matter to him once the title fight is finalized.

“It doesn’t matter who gets the win between Islam and Ian Garry, I will be the next.”

Long Layoff Could Help Prates Prepare

A possible wait for the championship fight could leave Prates inactive for several months. That would be unusual for a fighter who has stayed extremely active over the last few years.

Still, Prates believes extra time away from competition may benefit him physically and mentally.Prates said.

“It’s good for me! Get my injuries better, train a little bit more, improve, grow up as a fighter.”

“If it’s long to fight for the belt, I will be more well-prepared.”

Prates Wants Topuria Fight After Winning The Belt

While many fans expect Topuria to eventually pursue a fight with Makhachev at welterweight, Prates sees things differently. He expects the lightweight champion to remain at 155 pounds for now. Prates said:

“No. I think he’s going to still fight at 155.”

Prates already has his own vision for a future clash between the two champions.

“I’m thinking about to get the belt and then asking Topuria if he wants to come to 170. Let’s do this. Let’s dance!”
