The next global boxing spectacle may already have a date.
Naoya Inoue is coming off a win over Junto Nakatani, taking a unanimous decision on May 2, 2026. The bout carried historic weight in Japan, and Inoue delivered. He walked out with his perfect record intact and all four major super bantamweight titles still around his waist.
Now the focus shifts quickly. And the name attached is one fans have been waiting to hear.
A super fight in the works?
A clash between Inoue and Jesse Rodriguez is on the works for January 2027. Reports from Yahoo! Japan, later confirmed by The Ring, point to a major stadium event in Japan as part of Riyadh Season. The card is expected to be backed by Turki Alalshikh.
The scale is ambitious. Organizers are eyeing a record-breaking crowd. A special commemorative Ring belt is also planned for the fight.
Inoue made it clear he is open to the matchup.
“Of course I’ll fight, but it’s all about the timing,”
Inoue told The Ring.
Rodriguez has no hesitation either.
“I think me against Inoue would definitely be one of the biggest fights in the lower weight divisions.”
Rodriguez taking the risk
Rodriguez has his priorities to be handled for the fight to happen.
He is going to move up to bantamweight next month. His opponent will be Antonio Vargas, with the WBA World Bantamweight title on the line. The move is a clear step toward positioning himself for Inoue.
The potential matchup carries intrigue for fight fans. Inoue’s power and precision have dominated and heard across multiple divisions. Rodriguez brings speed, composure, and a willingness to chase legacy fights.
If both fighters stay on track, Japan could host one of the biggest lower-weight bouts in recent memory at the start of 2027.
