Arman Tsarukyan remains one of the top contenders in the UFC lightweight division, but for now, his future depends on what happens at UFC Freedom 250.
Fresh off another dominant performance at RAF 9, Tsarukyan revealed that he expects clarity on his next Octagon appearance after the lightweight title unification bout between Ilia Topuria and Justin Gaethje on June 14.
Tsarukyan Eyes Return Later This Year
Before turning his attention back to MMA, Tsarukyan stayed active in the wrestling world over the weekend. He earned his fifth straight victory under the RAF banner, dispatching Keelon Jimison in quick fashion.
Despite remaining busy, the Armenian contender is eager to resume his climb toward UFC gold. At the moment, he has been assigned as the official backup fighter for the Freedom 250 main event and plans to be ready if called upon.
Looking beyond June 14, Tsarukyan believes the result of the championship fight will shape the UFC’s plans for him. In his post-fight interview with MMA media, he said:
“I’m waiting for the White House card when they are going to fight and then they are going to announce my next fight.”
“If it’s Ilia, probably the end of this year. If it’s Gaethje, probably September-October.”
Topuria Remains Tsarukyan’s Preferred Opponent
While either champion would represent a major opportunity, Tsarukyan admitted he is hoping Topuria leaves Washington with both belts.
The lightweight contender believes a matchup against the undefeated champion carries the biggest challenge and the most intrigue.
“I want to fight Ilia Topuria. I think Ilia Topuria (wins).”
At the same time, Tsarukyan is not overlooking Gaethje’s chances. The veteran’s durability and experience have convinced him that the fight is far from a foregone conclusion.
“I think Justin is an OG and you never know. When he fought with Fiziev, everybody thought he’s young and a good striker and knocked him out. But he went there and showed he still can compete at the highest level. Same with Paddy Pimblett. 60-40.”
Questions Remain About Topuria’s Long-Term Plans
One scenario Tsarukyan is also monitoring involves Topuria potentially pursuing another championship opportunity outside the lightweight division.
The reigning champion has already captured titles in multiple weight classes, and Tsarukyan believes a move up could be appealing if the UFC approves it.
“… If UFC let’s him move up, he’s going to move up,”
“It’s better to fight with Islam than me, because it’s a third title, big money, and if he loses to Islam, it’s OK.”
βBut if he loses to me at 155, he’s going to be gone.”
