Charles Oliveira believes Conor McGregor chose an easier opponent instead of facing him. After defeating Max Holloway to capture the BMF title at UFC 326, Oliveira expected to be next in line for a showdown with McGregor. Instead, McGregor is set to return against Holloway at UFC 329 on July 11 in Las Vegas.
Oliveira claims McGregor wanted the easier fight
Oliveira said to MMA Fighting that he believes McGregor intentionally avoided a matchup with him.
“You and everyone else know that fight was supposed to be mine, but he chose Max because he thinks he can beat Max. The truth is, he ran from me.”
“It was never officially offered, but everyone knew that whoever won between Max and I would fight him.
“In reality, he picked Max because he thought it was the easier path.”
Oliveira breaks down McGregor vs. Holloway
Although Oliveira questioned McGregor’s decision, he expects a competitive fight after the Irish star’s lengthy absence from the Octagon.
“How many years has he been out now? It’s been a long time, five years without fighting.”
“But he’s Conor. If you make a mistake and he lands, he will knock you out.”
Oliveira believes McGregor holds the advantage early, while Holloway’s chances improve if the fight reaches the later rounds.
“I think the first and second rounds favor (Conor) a lot.”
“After that, things swing much more in Max’s favor… Once you get past those rounds, Max definitely has a much better chance of winning.”
