Quillan Salkilld put together the biggest performance of his UFC career on Saturday night, submitting Mateusz Gamrot before the opening round was over at UFC Vegas 120.
The lightweight matchup took place at the Meta Apex in Las Vegas, where Salkilld showed off his striking and grappling against one of the division’s most experienced competitors.
Salkilld Hurts Gamrot on the Feet
Salkilld came out aggressively and quickly found his rhythm with his jab and low kicks.
The Australian prospect then landed a clean left hook that visibly hurt Gamrot. The veteran immediately looked for a way to change the momentum, shooting for a single-leg takedown and working through several transitions.
Gamrot eventually found an opportunity to attack a heel hook, but Salkilld stayed composed and avoided the submission.
Salkilld then turned the scramble in his favor. He timed a takedown perfectly and worked his way into back control.
Back Control Leads to the Finish
Gamrot continued scrambling and tried to shake Salkilld off his back. The Polish fighter created several moments of movement, but Salkilld remained attached and continued hunting for the neck.
After making a few adjustments, Salkilld secured the choke.
Gamrot had no choice but to tap, bringing the fight to an end inside the opening round.
The finish was particularly impressive because Salkilld never looked out of place once the fight hit the canvas. He matched Gamrot’s scrambling ability and repeatedly punished his attempts to create an escape.
Salkilld entered UFC Vegas 120 with plenty to prove. He left Las Vegas looking like a lightweight contender worth watching closely.
