Cain Velasquez isn’t ruling out another walk to the cage, but don’t expect it to happen cheaply.

The former UFC heavyweight champion has stayed away from MMA competition since his first-round knockout loss to Francis Ngannou in 2019. In the years since, Velasquez shifted his focus toward coaching at American Kickboxing Academy, explored professional wrestling with WWE, and pursued several business ventures outside combat sports.

His life also changed dramatically following the legal troubles tied to a 2022 shooting case. Velasquez pleaded no contest in late 2024 to attempted murder and assault with a firearm. After receiving credit for time served and house arrest, he was released earlier this year.

Now 43 years old, Velasquez says a return to fighting is not something he actively wants. Still, he admitted there is one scenario that could bring him back.

“There is no wishlist as far as person, but if the money is right, the money is right,”

“It has to be right, and it has to be really good. It has to be really damn good for me to do that.”

Cain Velasquez says money would be the only reason to return

Velasquez made it clear that competition is no longer driving him the way it once did during his championship run in the UFC.

When Thompson brought up the idea of a long-discussed matchup with MMA icon Fedor Emelianenko in the latest Youtube video of WEIGHING IN, Velasquez pointed back to the same motivation.

“The money has to make me want to do it because I’ve said this before, I don’t want to do it,”

“I have other interests now, but the money has to make me really want to do it, and I don’t think anyone is willing to pay that.”

That mindset is a far cry from the relentless heavyweight who once overwhelmed opponents with pressure, pace, and conditioning. Velasquez built a reputation as one of the most complete heavyweights of his era, but injuries repeatedly interrupted his career.

Could another promotion make the offer?

A UFC comeback appears unlikely given the amount of time Velasquez has spent away from active competition. However, newer promotions looking for recognizable names could see value in a one-fight return.

Velasquez recently attended MVP MMA 1 and had positive things to say about the experience. He also praised MVP co-founder Jake Paul for welcoming him backstage and allowing him to interact with fighters during the event.

That has already sparked speculation among fans about whether a promotion backed by major streaming money and crossover appeal could eventually make a serious offer.

Even then, questions remain about how much Velasquez has left physically after years away from competition. He has not fought in seven years, and the heavyweight division has changed dramatically since his last appearance.

Still, the idea of “Cardio Cain” returning for one final payday is enough to keep MMA fans talking.
