Alexander Volkov delivered a veteran performance Saturday night at UFC 328, shutting down Waldo Cortes-Acosta over three rounds before demanding a heavyweight title opportunity.
Volkov earned the unanimous decision victory with scorecards of 30-27, 29-28, and 29-28.
Volkov’s Precision Frustrates Cortes-Acosta
The fight never turned into the wild brawl Cortes-Acosta wanted. Volkov controlled the pace from the outside and picked apart his opponent with kicks, jabs, and movement. Every time Cortes-Acosta tried to rush forward with looping punches, Volkov either circled away or answered with cleaner shots.
Volkov established his game early with leg kicks and body shots while using his massive reach to keep distance.
Cortes-Acosta had moments of success when he managed to close the gap, especially late in the first round when he landed a sharp combination on Volkov’s chin. Still, those were too inconsistent to swing the favor.
As the fight continued, frustration started showing from Cortes-Acosta. He repeatedly urged Volkov to stand and trade in the pocket.
That decision backfired in the second round. Volkov cracked him with a clean left hand that sent Cortes-Acosta stumbling backward toward the cage. It was the biggest shot of the fight and briefly had the crowd expecting a finish.
Instead, Volkov stayed disciplined and went back to controlling range with kicks and straight punches.
Cortes-Acosta pushed harder in the final round knowing he likely needed a finish. He landed several heavy punches, but Volkov responded every time with counters and body kicks that slowed the momentum.
Heavyweight Title Push Begins
In his post-fight speech, Volkov started by acknowledging Victory Day.
“I just want to say a very important thing right now, my country is very important holiday,” Volkov said after the fight. “It’s a day of victory of World War II. It’s a big honor for me to fight today and win.”
He also gave credit to his opponent after the win.
“I know you don’t like heavyweight fights that don’t come to a finish but Waldo’s a tough motherf*cker,” Volkov said. “He’s so good. It was a lot of danger.”
After the fight, Volkov immediately turned his attention toward the heavyweight title picture.
“Now real talk, [Ciryl] Gane, I beat him before, the judges robbed me,” Volkov said. “[Alex] Pereira is not a heavyweight. I should fight for this title. Give me the title shot, it doesn’t matter.”
The win extended Volkov’s recent run to six victories in his past seven fights. His only loss during that stretch came by split decision against Ciryl Gane in 2024.
