Sean Brady put together one of the most controlling performances of his career on Saturday, grinding down Joaquin Buckley over three rounds to earn a lopsided unanimous decision at UFC 328.

Total domination

From the opening minutes, Buckley showed improved awareness defensively, stuffing an early attempt and briefly keeping the fight standing. But the margin for error was razor thin. One mistimed low kick opened the door to a takedown, and Brady immediately capitalized, driving him to the canvas and taking control.

Brady advanced position with patience, moving to mount to rain down punches before transitioning to side control and threatening a kimura.

For the rest of the match, Buckley did manage brief escapes, but they rarely lasted. Each time he tried to reset his striking, Brady timed the shots cleanly and dragged him back into the ground.

Even as Buckley’s corner urged him to simplify his offense and avoid risky kicks and knees, Brady’s pressure never really relented. The final round was more of the same, with sustained top control, heavy control frames, and steady punishment that left no doubt on the scorecards.

The judges returned wide margins (30-25, 30-25, and 30-27), reflecting just how one-sided the match was. After the fight, Brady was candid about the mental reset behind the performance, admitting his previous outing had not reflected his preparation.

A much-needed reset

The Philly native was coming off a disappointing knockout loss to Michael Morales, entering the bout under pressure to re-establish himself in the welterweight title conversation.

Said Brady:

“I wasn’t mentally in that fight [against Michael Morales] but this fight camp for this fight, I was locked the f*ck in for 15 minutes, and that’s what happens. I didn’t get the finish, but no one’s ever dominated Buckley that way.”

Now, he emerges with renewed contender status, though the title picture at 170 remains crowded and unclear. Michael Morales, Carlos Prates, and Ian Garry all have a better claim to the title than he does. So he might need several fights before being considered for a title shot.
