Former UFC heavyweight title challenger Alistair Overeem may not be done competing after all. The veteran combat sports star recently revealed that he is exploring a possible comeback after spending the last few years focused on recovering from injuries that ultimately led to his retirement.

Overeem Says Motivation Is Back

Overeem explained during the Oleksandr Usyk vs. Rico Verhoeven card that years of rehabilitation and recovery work have helped him regain his health and renewed his interest in fighting again.

“The thing is I retired three and a half years ago,”

“Injuries took me out of the sport. Took me out. I couldn’t train. I was actually in pain. I dove into longevity. A lot of ice baths, a lot of dry needling, a lot of everything and actually healed my body.”

“There is motivation. We’re just looking at options. Like what can we do, what should we do?”

While he did not reveal whether he is targeting MMA, boxing, or kickboxing, Overeem made it clear that he is considering opportunities for a return.

Former Heavyweight Discusses Rico Verhoeven

Overeem also addressed the possibility of facing Rico Verhoeven, though he was quick to show respect toward the longtime kickboxing champion.

“I wouldn’t disrespect him like that,”

“This is his moment. Let that be.”

“Rico is an icon. He’s an icon, the kickboxing world is behind him, clean image, he’s actually a good guy.”

For now, Overeem remains focused on evaluating his options as speculation grows about a potential return to combat sports.

Alistair Overeem Had His “One Final Run” Almost 5 Years Ago

Alistair Overeem explicitly branded his late-stage UFC career as “One Final Run,” a strategic quest to capture the elusive heavyweight championship.

Following a heartbreaking knockout loss in late 2019, the 40-year-old veteran adopted a patient, grappling-heavy style to protect his chin and extend his career. The reinvention paid off in 2020 with consecutive ground-and-pound finishes over Walt Harris and Augusto Sakai, putting him back in title contention.

However, his aspirations were halted in February 2021 when Alexander Volkov stopped him via second-round TKO, prompting the UFC to release the legend a month later.

Refusing to let that defeat be his final act, Overeem returned to his kickboxing roots by signing with GLORY for a nostalgic farewell. His career culminated in October 2022 at GLORY Collision 4, where he faced longtime rival Badr Hari in a highly anticipated trilogy bout.

Overeem weathered early pressure and dropped the Moroccan powerhouse twice in the final round to secure a dramatic decision victory.

If he does choose to return, it will likely be a showcase fight against another veteran. Still, at the age of 46, one wonders what the “The Demolition Man” has left to prove.
