Former UFC champion B.J. Penn has been ruled mentally fit to stand trial after undergoing a court-ordered psychological evaluation tied to multiple arrests in 2025.

The ruling was issued by Judge Peter Kubota on May 29, clearing the way for Penn’s criminal case to move forward. He is scheduled to return to court on Aug. 28 for additional proceedings.

Court rules Penn fit to proceed

The judge approved the evaluation after reviewing reports from a court-appointed examiner. Neither side challenged the findings.

“The court, having reviewed the reports of defendant’s appointed examiner and noting that neither the state nor the defendant’s counsel contests the findings and contents of the report, finds by a preponderance of the evidence that defendant is fit to proceed.”

The order officially allows Penn’s case to continue through the legal system after months of uncertainty surrounding his mental state.

Arrests, allegations and restraining order

Penn was arrested five times in 2025 following repeated domestic incidents involving his mother, Lorraine Shin, who also filed a restraining order against him.

Authorities previously responded to multiple allegations of abuse, property disputes, and violations of that restraining order.

Shin also alleged “extreme psychological abuse” and claimed Penn believed family members had been replaced by imposters.

“In the best interest for my safety, I ask the court for a six-month [temporary restraining order] and have my son ordered to get medical treatment or other source of therapy.”

B.J. Penn’s Long Legal History

B.J. Penn’s legal history has been marked by controversy for more than a decade. The former UFC lightweight and welterweight champion was first linked to legal issues in January 2015, when he was arrested in Kihei, Hawaii, following an alleged assault outside a bar that reportedly left a friend with a fractured eye socket.

Although the case was eventually resolved without a formal conviction, it marked the beginning of a pattern of public incidents.

Between 2018 and 2019, Penn was involved in several highly publicized altercations in Hawaii, including a viral incident in which he was knocked unconscious during a street fight outside a Hilo nightclub. Those events were followed by restraining orders sought by family members and former partners who expressed concerns about his behavior.

In 2021, Penn was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence after a reckless driving incident in Honokaa, adding to a growing list of legal and personal struggles.

However, Penn’s troubles took a dramatic and deeply concerning turn in 2025 when his family revealed that he appeared to be suffering from a severe psychological crisis.
