The UFC has locked in a major headliner for its Oklahoma City event this summer.
Middleweight champion Dricus Du Plessis is set to face former welterweight titleholder Kamaru Usman in the main event of UFC OKC on July 18. The promotion confirmed the matchup through its social media channels.
Du Plessis is looking to bounce back
Du Plessis heads into the contest as one of the UFC’s top champions. The South African has built an impressive run inside the Octagon, defeating elite competition on his way to the top of the middleweight division.
Now he faces a different challenge in Usman, a former welterweight champion who spent years ruling the 170-pound division. Known for his wrestling, pressure, and championship experience, Usman remains one of the most accomplished fighters of his generation.
The matchup brings together two athletes who have spent significant portions of their careers near the top of the pound-for-pound rankings. And it has title implications.
For Du Plessis, the fight offers another opportunity to bounce back after his decisive loss to Khamzat Chimaev. A win might set him up with a rematch versus champion Sean Strickland, who he has already defeated, twice.
For Usman, the implications are similar. With a win over the former champ at middleweight, the former welterweight champion can prove himself as a legitimate contender for the middleweight strap.
