Christian Rodriguez snapped his skid in convincing fashion, finishing Hyder Amil in the opening round at UFC Fight Night 279 inside the UFC Apex in Las Vegas. The featherweight prospect mixed early damage with sharp submission instincts to secure a statement win.
Early Head Kick Sets up Guillotine
Rodriguez came out sharp from the start and immediately established control on the feet. He timed his attacks well and kept Amil under pressure with steady output.
The defining moment came when Rodriguez landed a clean right head kick that dropped Amil hard. The strike nearly ended the fight on its own and forced Amil into survival mode.
Amil managed to stay in the contest briefly, but the momentum had already shifted. Sensing the finish, Rodriguez stayed aggressive and closed distance quickly. As Amil tried to recover, Rodriguez latched onto a tight guillotine choke.
The pressure was immediate and severe. Amil had no room to escape once the hold was locked in.
Rodriguez squeezed until Amil went out cold at the 3:43 mark of Round 1, sealing the finish and ending the bout in decisive fashion.
A Much-Needed Win for C-Rod
Both fighters entered the matchup needing a result after back-to-back losses. The stakes were clear from the opening bell.
Rodriguez, now 13-4 overall and 6-4 in the UFC, halted his two-fight skid with a performance that showed both striking danger and submission awareness.
Rodriguez said in the post-fight interview that it was really hard his coach wasnβt by his side during the fight. He passed away last October.
βI lost my coach in October and it was really hard for me,β
βComing off two losses and showing who I am, it means the world to me.β
The win also marked a turning point as Rodriguez continues his transition to Xtreme Couture under coach Eric Nicksick.
