Michael Chandler has built a career on chaos. The former Bellator champion has never been accused of fighting smart. He has been accused of fighting entertaining, and there is a big difference.
At UFC Freedom 250, Chandler gets another massive opportunity when he welcomes surging Brazilian knockout artist Mauricio Ruffy to the biggest stage possible: the White House lawn.
Mauricio Ruffy vs Michael Chandler Odds
Oddsmakers have completely abandoned Chandler in this matchup. Ruffy opened as a moderate favorite but has since ballooned to a staggering -600 favorite (1.17), while Chandler sits at +450 (5.50).
Is this disrespect toward a proven veteran? Or is Chandler about to become another highlight on Ruffy’s growing knockout reel?
Mauricio Ruffy Has The Tools To Be A Star
Ruffy enters this fight with a 13-2 professional record and has won four of his last five bouts. His lone setback came against Benoit Saint Denis, a fight that exposed some grappling deficiencies but may ultimately become one of the most valuable lessons of his career.
The Brazilian striker possesses legitimate fight-ending power. Twelve of his 13 victories have come by stoppage.
What separates Ruffy from many knockout artists is his creativity. He is not simply throwing basic combinations and waiting for opponents to make mistakes. He mixes spinning attacks, wheel kicks, explosive counters, and fast combinations together in a way that constantly forces opponents to react.
His knockout of Rafael Fiziev showed exactly why so many people are excited about his future. Against one of the most technical strikers in the division, Ruffy remained composed and delivered a shocking finish.
At just 29 years old, he appears to be entering his athletic prime.
Chandler’s Wrestling Is The Biggest Threat
There is one major reason why betting on this fight feels uncomfortable. Michael Chandler can wrestle. People tend to forget that because Chandler himself often forgets it.
The former NCAA Division I All-American has the credentials to make life difficult for almost anyone at lightweight. We watched Benoit Saint Denis pressure Ruffy, drag him to the ground, and neutralize much of his offense.
If Chandler committed to a wrestling-heavy game plan, he could potentially replicate parts of that success. The problem is that Chandler rarely fights the smart fight.
Instead of leaning on his wrestling pedigree, he prefers to stand in the pocket, trade bombs, and create memorable moments. It is great for fans. It is not always great for his win-loss record.
At 40 years old and riding a three-fight losing streak, Chandler has become increasingly reliant on athleticism and toughness rather than strategy. Against Ruffy, that approach could be disastrous.
Still he promised to get his hand raised, and he seems ready to embrace the bugs, so we will see what style he will come out with
The White House Crowd Will Bring Out Vintage Chandler
If this fight were taking place inside the UFC Apex, perhaps there would be a chance Chandler wrestles. This fight is happening at UFC Freedom 250 in front of a historic crowd, under the spotlight of one of the biggest events in UFC history.
That sounds like the perfect recipe for Chandler to do exactly what Chandler always does. Expect him to charge forward early, throw massive punches, and look for a highlight-reel finish.
Unfortunately for him, Ruffy might be the worst possible opponent for that style. The Brazilian thrives against aggressive fighters who leave openings during exchanges.
Chandler still carries knockout power, but his defensive habits have deteriorated over the years. His chin has absorbed a tremendous amount of damage throughout his UFC career.
Eventually, that catches up to everyone.
Mauricio Ruffy vs Michael Chandler Prediction
I think Michael Chandler comes out aggressively and makes the first round exciting.
He may even have moments of success early as he pressures Ruffy and forces exchanges. But unless Chandler suddenly decides to become a disciplined wrestler for the first time in years, he is playing directly into Ruffy’s strengths.
Ruffy’s speed is better. His striking is sharper. His timing is cleaner. At some point in the second round, Chandler will overcommit, leave an opening, and Ruffy will find it.
Then comes the part we’ve seen many times before.
Chandler gets stopped, stands up, gives an inspirational post-fight speech about adversity, and somehow finds an embarassing way to call out Conor McGregor again.
