As questions continue to swirl around the outdoor conditions for UFC Freedom 250, Michael Chandler appears more concerned with adapting than complaining.

The former Bellator champion is set to compete on the historic White House card on June 14, where he will face surging lightweight contender Mauricio Ruffy. While fans and fighters have debated everything from the summer heat to possible rain, another topic has become impossible to ignore: the bugs.

Chandler Gets a Taste of White House Fight Conditions

A recent training video offered a glimpse into Chandler’s preparation for the unique event. After finishing a series of conditioning sprints, the veteran fighter approached the camera with insects covering his face, neck, and chest.

“Ey, we’re ready for the bugs! Dana, you said there was gonna be bugs, dude? We need an exterminator out here. This is crazy.”

He then picked a bug off his nose and ate it! The 40-year-old explained that the insects became a bigger issue as the workout went on.

“We came out here to acclimatize to the heat and got acclimated to the bugs,”

“I didn’t notice them until halfway through and then I was like, ‘Oh there’s a few bugs here. I saw one on me and next time I looked down I had two hundred and fifty.”

A Crucial Fight Against a Dangerous Prospect

The matchup with Ruffy comes at an important moment in Chandler’s UFC career. After spending years attached to a highly anticipated fight with Conor McGregor that never happened, Chandler now finds himself facing one of the division’s most explosive young talents instead.

Despite holding just one victory in his last six appearances, Chandler continues to train with the same intensity that made him a fan favorite. His willingness to engage in action-packed battles has produced memorable fights, though it has also contributed to several setbacks inside the Octagon.

Can Chandler Change His Approach?

Ruffy presents a difficult challenge with his creativity, speed, and striking arsenal. On paper, Chandler’s wrestling could offer a path to neutralizing the Brazilian prospect’s offense. Whether he chooses that route remains to be seen.

Throughout his UFC run, Chandler has often favored crowd-pleasing exchanges over a more conservative strategy.

Because of Ruffy’s insane momentum and Chandler’s recent skid, UFC bookies have positioned Ruffy as a heavy betting favorite (sitting around 1/2 or -200), with Chandler placed as a considerable underdog.

However, Chandler still possesses that explosive, All-American wrestling background. If he decides to deviate from his usual “stand and bang” entertainment style and use his grappling to slow Ruffy down, he has a veteran’s path to an upset.

With the stakes growing higher and another loss potentially looming, fight fans will be watching closely to see which version of “Iron Mike” shows up in Washington.
