MOM KNOWS BEST? – Islam Makhachev Hints at Retirement

Islam Makhachev’s future in MMA is once again being viewed through a familiar lens in Dagestan. The same family influence that shaped Khabib Nurmagomedov’s early exit from the sport is now part of the conversation around the current lightweight king, Islam Makhachev.

With Makhachev already a double champion and deep into his 30s, questions about how long he will continue fighting are starting to follow him more closely.

A long-running conversation at home

Makhachev has never hidden the fact that retirement talk has been present in his household for years. It is not a new pressure, but something that has quietly followed his entire rise through the sport. He spoke openly about him and his mother’s conversation in an interview with Murad LaRiba.

“This has been a conversation with my mom for many years now”.

“I remember when I won the Combat Sambo World Championship, before I had even started my professional career. My mom said, ‘That’s it, there’s no Olympics in Sambo, you’ve already won a world title. That’s enough.’ Since then, we’ve kept coming back to this topic.”

The discussion has only intensified as his career reached its peak. Titles, wins, and unbeaten stretches have not changed the fact that his mother still sees retirement as an option worth considering.

The Khabib comparison

The situation inevitably draws comparisons to Khabib Nurmagomedov, who stepped away from MMA at 29-0 after promising his mother he would not continue fighting following his father’s passing.

That same example now sits close to Makhachev’s own reality, even if he describes his case as less absolute.

“Lately, she’s been telling me, ‘Khabib listened to his mother, but you don’t want to listen,’”

“I tell her that she never put the question that way. She never said, ‘Either you stop, or…’ Recently, she told me, ‘I want to meet Khabib. We need to talk.’ I asked, ‘What do you need to talk to him about?’ She said, ‘We just need to talk.’ I haven’t arranged that meeting yet.”

Still, Makhachev has not shut the door on the idea entirely. His stance remains conditional and tied directly to his mother’s final word.

“But if my mom ever truly puts her foot down and insists, then of course.”

At 28-1 with championship history in multiple divisions, Makhachev’s legacy is already secure. The only question left is how long it continues to grow before family, not competition, decides the ending.
