One of the most remarkable comeback stories in combat sports will continue this summer when Ben Askren steps back onto the wrestling mats at RAF 11.

Promotion officials have confirmed that Askren will face Belal Muhammad on July 18 at Panther Arena in Milwaukee. The matchup marks Askren’s first appearance for Real American Freestyle after helping build the promotion behind the scenes since its launch.

Askren Returns After Life-Threatening Health Battle

Just over a year ago, the former UFC star faced a serious battle with pneumonia that resulted in a double lung transplant. The condition became life-threatening and kept him hospitalized for nearly two months before he was finally able to return home.

Since then, Askren has steadily worked toward rebuilding his health and strength. Now, the former NCAA champion and Olympic wrestler is preparing to compete again in front of fans.

Known to MMA audiences as “Funky,” Askren has remained closely involved with RAF, serving as one of the promotion’s matchmakers while recovering. Now he will return to competition, with a brand new set of lungs!

Muhammad Looks to Bounce Back in RAF

Standing across from Askren will be former UFC welterweight champion Belal Muhammad, who is searching for his first victory under the RAF banner.

Muhammad made his promotional debut at RAF 4 last December, where he was defeated by David Carr via technical fall.

The appearance at RAF 11 will be Muhammad’s second outing for the organization. Before then, however, he has unfinished business inside the Octagon.

Muhammad is scheduled to headline UFC Vegas 118 this Saturday against Gabriel Bonfim. He enters that bout looking to halt a two-fight losing streak and regain momentum before turning his attention to Askren.
