Former UFC light heavyweight title challenger Anthony Smith is facing serious legal trouble after being arrested Monday night in Nebraska on multiple felony charges. The 38-year-old, who now works as a UFC analyst, has been accused of domestic violence causing serious bodily injury, making terroristic threats, and first-degree false imprisonment.
New details emerge
TMZ Sports initially reported that Smith was booked into a Nebraska county jail shortly before 9 p.m. local time on July 27, 2026. Now the alleged details that led up to the events have surfaced.
Smith made his initial court appearance on Wednesday and was released after posting a $500,000 bond. As part of the release conditions, he has been ordered to have no contact with his wife.
The incident allegedly began after an argument at a bar in Gretna, Nebraska. There the former prize fighert allegedly threatened to kill his wife after she refused to leave with him. Authorities claim he then forced her into a vehicle by grabbing and shoving her inside.
According to the Douglas County Attorney’s Office, Smith’s wife managed to escape during the drive. Investigators allege Smith then attempted several times to strike her with the vehicle, but she avoided being hit. After this, according to certain witnesses, shots were fired in the Smith home. Officials later obtained an arrest warrant, and Smith subsequently surrendered to law enforcement.
Smith remains presumed innocent
Of the charges, the domestic violence allegation carries the harshest potential penalty, with a maximum sentence of up to 20 years in prison if convicted. The terroristic threats charge carries a maximum sentence of up to three years in prison if convicted. Smith also faces up to three years behind bars on the first-degree false imprisonment charge.
As with any criminal matter, Smith is presumed innocent unless and until his guilt is established through the legal process.
From UFC contender to analyst and BKMMA competitor
Smith stepped away from MMA competition in April 2025 after losing to Roman Dolidze and Dominick Reyes. In his farewell fight, Mingyang Zhang stopped the former title challenger with a first-round TKO.
Smith’s final fight was with Jorge Masvidal’s Bare Knuckle MMA promotion. There he moved up to heavyweight, submitting Chase Sherman in his promotional debut.
Outside the cage, Smith has remained a familiar face to UFC fans as a desk analyst for the promotion’s Paramount+ broadcasts, regularly appearing on pre-fight and post-fight coverage.
