Conor McGregor’s long-awaited return to the Octagon came to a heartbreaking end on Saturday night as an apparent knee injury forced an abrupt stoppage in his rematch against Max Holloway at UFC 329 in Las Vegas.

The former two-division champion had not competed in five years, but his comeback lasted only moments before disaster struck.

Injury Occurs in Opening Seconds

McGregor opened the fight aggressively, but trouble appeared almost immediately. He slipped to the canvas twice during the opening exchanges, allowing Holloway to briefly take top position and land a few punches.

After getting back to his feet, McGregor attempted to continue but suddenly fell again without significant contact from his opponent.

Replay footage later showed that the injury may have occurred during McGregor’s first offensive attack, a leaping left roundhouse kick thrown in the opening seconds of the fight.

Holloway Recognizes Something Is Wrong

As McGregor struggled to stand, Holloway quickly realized his opponent was injured and looked toward the referee rather than pressing the action.

McGregor was allowed to get back to his feet, but it became clear he could no longer put weight on his leg. The referee stepped in shortly afterward, bringing an end to the highly anticipated main event.

The disappointing finish ended the fight before either man could establish any offense, with McGregor failing to land a significant strike before the stoppage.
