The Irish contender will challenge Makhachev for the UFC welterweight title on Aug. 15 in Philadelphia. Despite entering the fight as a heavy underdog, Garry is confident he has the tools to hand the champion a rare defeat.

Garry points to recent UFC upsets

Garry told Paul Browne MMA Youtube that he believes recent title fights have shown that even the biggest favorites can be beaten.

He pointed to Sean Strickland’s split decision win over Khamzat Chimaev at UFC 328, where Strickland captured the middleweight title as an underdog. He also referenced Justin Gaethje’s knockout victory over Ilia Topuria at UFC Freedom 250, which handed Topuria the first loss of his professional career.

“When Sean Strickland goes out and beats Khamzat Chimaev and upsets the apple cart… no one can think that it’s impossible that I can beat Islam Makhachev,”

Confident ahead of UFC 330

Garry believes he presents more challenges for Makhachev than many expect.

“I am the most dangerous opponent for Islam Makhachev, and it’s my job to go out and prove that on Aug. 15.”

Makhachev enters the championship bout looking to extend his winning streak and set a new UFC record for consecutive victories.

What gives Garry confidence

When asked why he believes he can upset the champion, Garry pointed to qualities he considers his greatest strengths.

“My mindset, my vision, and my fight IQ,”
