Usman Nurmagomedov is frequently mentioned as a future UFC signing, but Khabib Nurmagomedov believes his cousin owes much of his rise to the opportunities he received outside the Octagon.
During an appearance on the “Smol Talk” podcast, the former UFC lightweight champion credited the Professional Fighters League for providing Usman with the stage to grow into one of the most respected fighters currently competing outside the UFC.
Khabib Praises PFL’s Role
According to Khabib, Usman was still a young prospect when he signed with Bellator in 2021 and needed time to grow as a fighter.
“Without the PFL, who would have known Usman? At 21, he wouldn’t have made it to the UFC.”
“They gave him a base, the roots, the opportunity to grow. The PFL made him a star.”
Khabib also pointed to Usman’s accomplishments under the Bellator and PFL banner as a major reason for his current reputation.
“He spent the best years and had the best fights of his early career under that banner, and the PFL helped make him what he is today.”
One of MMA’s Most Coveted Free Agents
Usman heads into his next title defense carrying an unblemished 21-0 record with one no contest. He is set to put his PFL lightweight title on the line against Archie Colgan on July 31 at UBS Arena in Long Island, New York.
According to Khabib, his cousin has evolved into one of the biggest stars competing outside the UFC, making him one of the most coveted talents beyond the promotion.
“Among the Top 10 fighters outside the UFC, Usman is No. 1”
“The PFL platform gave him that position, and I’m deeply grateful to them.”
Future Remains Unclear
With Usman’s contract reportedly nearing its end, speculation about a UFC signing has intensified. However, Khabib declined to discuss what comes next.
“I can’t discuss it now, and out of respect for the PFL, I don’t want to.”
For now, Usman’s focus remains on defending his lightweight title, while the MMA world continues to watch for any developments regarding his future.
