Magomed Ankalaev returned to the win column on Saturday after grinding out a fifth-round TKO victory over Bogdan Guskov in the main event of UFC Abu Dhabi at Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi, UAE.

The former UFC light heavyweight champion delivered a measured performance before finally breaking through with a late stoppage against the dangerous short-notice replacement.

Ankalaev Sticks to His Patient Approach

Ankalaev entered the fight looking to bounce back from his title defeat to Alex Pereira at UFC 313 in March 2025. Rather than chase an early finish, the Russian stayed true to the style that has brought him success throughout his UFC career.

He kept his distance during the striking exchanges and refused to take unnecessary risks against Guskov, who carried knockout power into the contest despite stepping in as a late replacement.

The cautious pace made for a tactical battle over the opening rounds. Ankalaev remained in control, waiting for opportunities instead of forcing the action.

Wrestling Opens the Door for the Finish

As the fight progressed, Ankalaev began mixing in takedowns and sustained ground control. His pressure slowly wore Guskov down, limiting the underdog’s chances to land a fight-changing strike.

By the fifth round, the damage had started to show. Ankalaev secured top position along the fence and unleashed a series of heavy punches. Guskov was unable to defend himself effectively, prompting the referee to stop the contest and award Ankalaev the TKO victory.

The finish capped off an otherwise methodical performance. While the result may not immediately place Ankalaev back in title contention, it gives the former champion an important victory as he looks to climb back into the light heavyweight picture.
