Mateusz Gamrot has no intention of letting a brutal setback at UFC Vegas 120 define the next chapter of his career.

The former UFC lightweight title challenger suffered a first-round submission loss to Quillan Salkilld in Saturday’s main event at Meta APEX in Las Vegas. The defeat marked another difficult result for Gamrot, who has struggled to build consistent momentum in recent years.

Shortly after the loss, Gamrot addressed the setback on social media with a simple message:

“The story continues.”

Gamrot Faces Another Tough Setback

Gamrot entered the fight as the No. 8-ranked lightweight, but Salkilld quickly showed why he has become one of the division’s fastest-rising names. The Australian contender forced Gamrot to tap in the opening round, handing the Polish veteran his second submission defeat in his last three fights.

Gamrot previously suffered a submission loss to former UFC lightweight champion Charles Oliveira. His recent run has also been difficult to navigate, with the 35-year-old alternating wins and losses across his last six appearances.

That inconsistency has pushed him further away from the title picture. For years, Gamrot established himself as one of the UFC’s most difficult lightweights to deal with. His wrestling, scrambling and relentless pace made him a dangerous matchup for almost anyone in the division.

But the loss to Salkilld was particularly damaging. Instead of shutting down another rising contender, Gamrot was stopped before he could settle into the fight.

Gatekeeper Status Next for Gamrot?

A return to the title mix is unlikely to be the immediate priority. Gamrot will probably need to string together some wins before the UFC considers putting him back against another top contender. The lightweight division remains crowded, and younger fighters are continuing to push toward the top.

A rematch with Rafael Fiziev could make sense. Gamrot defeated Fiziev by majority decision at UFC Vegas 79 after Fiziev suffered a knee injury during the fight.

Tofiq Musayev could also be an interesting option if the UFC wants to pair Gamrot with another experienced lightweight who is building momentum. Given his age and ranking, the UFC is likely to start using him as a gatekeeper for its up-and-coming talent.
