Umar Nurmagomedov returns to the main-event spotlight against Song Yadong in a huge bantamweight clash at UFC Shanghai. The stakes are obvious. Nurmagomedov is ranked No. 3, Song sits at No. 6, and the winner should put himself firmly in the title conversation. Here is my Umar Nurmagomedov vs Song Yadong prediction.

Nurmagomedov enters with a 20-1 record and has rebuilt momentum since his unsuccessful title challenge against Merab Dvalishvili. He followed that defeat with unanimous-decision victories over Mario Bautista and Deiveson Figueiredo.

Song, meanwhile, is coming off a submission victory over Figueiredo and gets the opportunity to score the biggest win of his career in front of a home crowd in China.

Umar Nurmagomedov vs Song Yadong odds

Nurmagomedov is a massive favorite:

Umar Nurmagomedov-5501.18
Song Yadong+4005.00

The market has moved strongly toward Nurmagomedov. Earlier lines had him around -400, with Song available at roughly +310. Money on the favorite eventually pushed Nurmagomedov beyond -500 at several sportsbooks.

That is a huge price against a fighter as dangerous as Song. The method-of-victory markets also tell us plenty. Nurmagomedov by decision has been priced around -150 to -175, while the over 4.5 rounds sits around -230 to -240. The expectation is clearly that Nurmagomedov controls enough of the fight to win without necessarily finding a finish.

Umar Nurmagomedov: Too many weapons?

Nurmagomedov is one of the most complete fighters in the bantamweight division. The obvious weapon is his grappling. He can attack with conventional shots, trips and body locks before seamlessly transitioning from one takedown attempt to another.

But reducing Nurmagomedov to a wrestler undersells him. His movement and kicking game make him extremely difficult to read at range. He moves in and out quickly, attacks from distance and uses that striking threat to create better opportunities to wrestle.

That versatility is particularly important against Song. Repeatedly shooting predictable takedowns could play into Song’s improved defensive wrestling. Nurmagomedov doesn’t need to do that. He can kick at range, force Song to react and choose his moments to initiate grappling exchanges.

The longer those exchanges continue, the harder it becomes for Song to keep winning them. Nurmagomedov averages 4.03 takedowns per 15 minutes, and his ability to chain attacks together gives him several ways to turn a defended first attempt into a successful second or third one.

Song Yadong: A dangerous underdog at +400

The odds make Song look like he has very little chance. I’m not convinced the gap is quite that big. Song’s defensive wrestling has improved considerably.

His ability to manage distance, sprawl and separate from grappling exchanges has become an increasingly important part of his game. His takedown defense is listed around 73-74%, and his recent performances suggest he is becoming more comfortable dealing with fighters who want to grapple.

That’s what makes this matchup interesting. I expect Song to defend some takedowns, particularly early. Nurmagomedov may eventually break through, but this probably isn’t a fight where he can simply shoot once, put Song on his back and keep him there for five rounds.

Song also carries the more obvious one-shot threat. Nurmagomedov has been hurt before, even if his recovery has generally been excellent. Song has the speed, power and athleticism to punish him if he gets careless entering range. At +400 (5.00), that makes Song very tempting.

Can Song keep Nurmagomedov off him for five rounds?

This is the key question. Song doesn’t necessarily have to stop every takedown. He needs to prevent Nurmagomedov from turning those takedowns into long stretches of control.

Early on, I think he can. The problem comes when Nurmagomedov starts connecting his different weapons. A failed single leg can become a body lock. A defended body lock can become a trip. Song may successfully stop the first and second attacks, but Nurmagomedov is excellent at continuing the sequence until something opens.

Doing that repeatedly over 25 minutes is a different challenge from defending isolated takedowns. Song should have his moments on the feet. He may even hurt Nurmagomedov at some stage. But Nurmagomedov has more ways to dictate where this fight takes place, and that should allow him to bank rounds even if Song makes him work much harder than the odds suggest.

Umar Nurmagomedov vs Song Yadong prediction

I can’t justify Nurmagomedov at -550 (1.18). Song is too athletic, too durable and too dangerous on the feet for me to lay that kind of price. His improved defensive wrestling also gives him a realistic chance of keeping portions of this fight competitive.

But predicting the upset is another matter. Over five rounds, Nurmagomedov’s complete MMA game should make the difference. He can compete with Song at range, mix in kicks and gradually increase the wrestling pressure as the fight progresses.

Song will defend takedowns. He may land the harder punches. There could even be moments where anyone holding a Nurmagomedov ticket gets nervous.

Ultimately, though, I expect Nurmagomedov’s chain wrestling and ability to control where the fight takes place to give him enough rounds on the scorecards.

Song at +400 (5.00) has some underdog value, but Nurmagomedov by decision is the more attractive way to back the favorite.
