Anthony Joshua is back in camp and preparing for another run at the heavyweight title, according to promoter Eddie Hearn.
Speaking with DAZN, Hearn shared updates on Joshua’s recovery and mindset after a difficult period that included a tragic car accident in Nigeria and the loss of two close friends.
Joshua is expected to return against Agron Smakici Prenga on July 25 before a planned blockbuster showdown with Tyson Fury later this year.
Hearn Says Joshua Has Returned With A Different Purpose
Hearn explained that Joshua needed time away from the spotlight after the emotional events that impacted him outside the ring.
“It’s a huge moment. Obviously we finished last year with the Jake Paul fight”
“(then there was the) devastation of the tragic accident in Nigeria and the passing of his two closest friends. It was a terrible moment for everybody and the families.”
According to Hearn, Joshua has spent the last several weeks rebuilding momentum in training camp and appears mentally refreshed.
Joshua Expected To Bring Aggressive Style Into Return Fight
Hearn also addressed Joshua’s upcoming opponent and whether the former heavyweight champion needs rounds to shake off ring rust.
“I think it’s very hard to do the distance with Anthony Joshua. Prenga’s a big puncher. … If you’re going to beat Tyson Fury, you need to be going through people like Pregna.”
Training Alongside Usyk Building Joshua’s Confidence
Joshua has also been working closely with Oleksandr Usyk, the man who defeated him twice in world title fights. Hearn believes the partnership has helped rebuild Joshua’s confidence.
“This new setup with Oleksandr Usyk’s been incredible, he’s extremely motivated, and he’s fighting with a different purpose now as well.”
“These guys are like Apollo and Rocky. It’s just that they’re bringing each other on.”
