The UFC is bringing a middleweight showdown to Northern California this summer.

Top-ranked contenders Anthony Hernandez and Gregory Rodrigues are set to headline UFC Sacramento on Aug. 22 at the Golden 1 Center, marking the promotion’s first event in the city since 2019. The matchup was first reported by NBC Sacramento.

Hernandez returns home looking to bounce back

Hernandez enters the fight looking to recover after falling short against current UFC middleweight champion Sean Strickland in his most recent appearance. The defeat ended an impressive eight-fight winning streak that established “Fluffy” as one of the division’s fastest-rising contenders.

During that run, Hernandez earned six finishes and collected notable victories over Roman Dolidze, Roman Kopylov, Michel Pereira, and Brendan Allen.

The Sacramento main event gives the Northern California native an opportunity to compete in front of a hometown crowd. It will also be the third UFC main event of his career as he looks to reestablish himself in the title picture.

Rodrigues looks to continue impressive run

Rodrigues heads into the biggest opportunity of his career with plenty of momentum. The Brazilian has won three straight fights, including devastating one-punch knockout victories over Jack Hermansson and Brunno Ferreira.

Overall, “Robocop” has gone 6-1 across his last seven UFC appearances. His only setback during that stretch came in his first main event against Jared Cannonier.

A win over Hernandez could move Rodrigues closer to the top tier of the middleweight division.

Grappling meets knockout power

The matchup presents an intriguing clash of styles.

Hernandez has built his success on relentless pressure, high-paced wrestling, and dominant grappling that wears opponents down over the course of a fight.

Rodrigues is known for his explosive punching power, but his credentials extend beyond striking. He is also an eight-time Brazilian jiu-jitsu national champion, giving him the tools to compete wherever the fight goes.

No additional bouts have been announced for UFC Sacramento, though more fights are expected to be added as the event approaches.
