Ilia Topuria’s unbeaten run came to an end in dramatic fashion at UFC Freedom 250, and the result has sparked fresh debate about where he stands among the sport’s elite. While many still believe the former two-division champion has the talent to reclaim the throne, UFC commentator Jon Anik believes the toughest chapter of Topuria’s career is only beginning.
Anik expects Topuria to respond after first career defeat
Topuria entered his first lightweight title defense riding a perfect 17-0 record after capturing the belt with a knockout win over Charles Oliveira in June 2025. His momentum was halted when interim champion Justin Gaethje stopped him in the fourth round at the White House event.
Despite the setback, Anik told Submission Radio that he believes the loss could become a defining moment in Topuria’s career. Joe Rogan has the same ideas.
“I think this will probably be more interesting to see how Ilia Topuria comes out of the other side of this.”
“Now the focus is on regaining a title he was not successfully able to defend, in a weight class in which he is going to be relinquishing size to a lot of these guys.”
Anik acknowledged the physical challenges Topuria faces against larger lightweights but remains confident in the former champion’s mindset.
“Size does matter at some point in this equation, but he’s a mental giant, in my opinion.”
Topuria still has something to prove at 155 pounds
Before moving to lightweight, Topuria built his reputation by knocking out Alexander Volkanovski and Max Holloway during his featherweight title reign. Many fans began placing him in greatest-of-all-time discussions after he added a second UFC belt to his resume.
Anik, however, believes the conversation around Topuria’s legacy at lightweight should remain on hold until he re-establishes himself in the division.
“I think he will come back strong against any opponent.”
“At lightweight, he’s unproven, and he’ll be ready to prove himself at 155, hopefully sooner rather than later.”
December return remains a possibility
Topuria suffered two broken orbital bones during the loss to Gaethje, but his camp believes the recovery is progressing well. He is also seen looking better last week. Team member Jesus Gallo recently suggested the former champion could return before the end of the year.
“If you saw us in a rematch or in a fight, it would be toward the end of the year, in December.”
Topuria has not publicly announced his comeback plans, although reports indicate he is interested in an immediate rematch with Gaethje if the opportunity becomes available.
