Robert Whittaker’s move to the light heavyweight division got off to a successful start on Saturday night as the former middleweight champion stopped Nikita Krylov in the third round at UFC 329 in Las Vegas.
Competing at 205 pounds for the first time in the UFC, Whittaker overcame a difficult opening round before taking control and finishing the fight with a series of damaging strikes.
Krylov Tests Whittaker Early
Krylov looked to use his size and wrestling advantage from the start. He repeatedly forced Whittaker into defensive situations and made the Australian work hard during the opening five minutes.
While Krylov never secured dominant control, the pressure appeared to slow Whittaker early as both fighters returned to their corners breathing heavily after the first round.
Whittaker Finds His Rhythm
The fight began to shift in the second round as Whittaker settled into his striking game. His jab consistently found the target, allowing him to control the distance and keep Krylov from closing in for takedowns.
As the rounds progressed, Whittaker mixed sharp combinations with timely counters, repeatedly catching Krylov as he attempted to enter range. The damage continued to build as Krylov struggled to deal with the former middleweight champion’s speed.
Third-Round Finish Seals Debut Victory
Whittaker put the fight away midway through the third round. A powerful right hand stunned Krylov, and a follow-up right landed moments later, visibly damaging the Ukrainian’s jaw.
Krylov immediately grabbed his mouth and turned away, prompting the referee to stop the contest and award Whittaker the victory.
The win gives Whittaker a successful start in the light heavyweight division and places the longtime contender in position for a matchup against a ranked opponent in his new weight class.
