Jean Silva is preparing for a showdown with Yair Rodriguez at Noche UFC 4, but the rising featherweight contender already has his eyes on a much bigger opportunity.
Silva believes he could end up replacing Movsar Evloev in a future title fight against Alexander Volkanovski if the unbeaten Russian withdraws.
Silva Expects a Possible Change
Silva is scheduled to headline Noche UFC 4 in Glendale against former interim featherweight champion Rodriguez. The 29-year-old Brazilian, however, told in his Youtube video that he thinks his matchup could change if Evloev is forced out of his expected title opportunity against Volkanovski.
“There’s a big risk he’ll pull out of the fight and they’ll put me in his place.”
“I still believe I’ll fight for the belt instead of fighting Rodriguez… but I have a slight feeling in my heart that Evloev will withdraw from the fight.”
Silva’s prediction remains just that for now. His immediate assignment is Rodriguez, and a victory would strengthen his position near the top of the featherweight division.
Volkanovski Awaits His Next Challenger
Evloev currently sits at No. 1 in both the Meta and Media rankings and remains one of the leading contenders for Volkanovski’s championship. The Russian’s potential title fight with Volkanovski has yet to be officially announced, but he is widely expected to challenge for the belt later this year.
Silva has plenty of momentum of his own. A win over Rodriguez would give him a strong case to face the winner of Volkanovski and Evloev. If Evloev does withdraw, Silva could suddenly find himself with the opportunity he believes is waiting for him. For now, though, Rodriguez stands between Silva and the title picture.
