Mackenzie Dern makes the first defense of her UFC women’s strawweight title when she faces Gillian Robertson in the UFC 330 co-main event. On paper, this is about as grappling-heavy as a UFC title fight gets. Here is my official Mackenzie Dern vs. Gillian Robertson prediction.

Dern’s first title defence

Dern captured the vacant belt with a decision win over Virna Jandiroba at UFC 321 and now gets another dangerous ground specialist. Robertson enters her first UFC title fight on a five-fight winning streak and owns the record for the most submission victories in UFC women’s history.

That creates a fascinating question. Robertson may actually have the wrestling advantage, but does she really want to repeatedly put one of the best Brazilian jiu-jitsu practitioners in women’s MMA on her back?

Mackenzie Dern vs. Gillian Robertson odds

Dern enters UFC 330 as a significant favorite. The champion is currently around -230 (1.43), while Robertson sits at approximately +190 (2.90). Dern opened closer to -180/-200, meaning the UFC betting market has moved further toward the champion as fight night approaches.

That UFC odds movement makes sense. Robertson’s biggest weapon is her grappling, but she is facing an opponent who may be even more dangerous once the fight hits the mat.

There is still an interesting dynamic here, though. Robertson could be the better pure wrestler, which potentially gives her more control over where this fight takes place.

Mackenzie Dern: Dangerous from absolutely everywhere on the mat

Dern enters her first title defense with a 16-5 record and three consecutive victories. She beat Loopy Godinez by decision, submitted Amanda Ribas with an armbar and then defeated Virna Jandiroba to become strawweight champion.

Her development has been interesting to watch because Dern is no longer completely dependent on getting fights to the ground.

Her boxing has improved considerably over the years. She still isn’t an elite technical striker, but she throws with power, is willing to exchange and has become much more comfortable fighting extended periods on the feet.

Against Robertson, that could be enough. I give Dern the advantage in striking power and believe she can win minutes standing. Robertson has also improved considerably on the feet, but striking exchanges aren’t necessarily where the challenger wants to spend 25 minutes.

Then there is the obvious problem: Dern’s guard. Taking Dern down isn’t the same as controlling her. Her ability to attack submissions, sweep, reverse position and create offense from her back makes simply holding top position incredibly difficult. Amanda Ribas managed to successfully wrestle Dern and survive her guard in their first meeting. In the rematch, Dern eventually caught her with a third-round armbar.

Robertson might survive one round playing that game, maybe two. But can she do it for five?

Gillian Robertson: The wrestler who gets to choose

Robertson has earned this opportunity. The Canadian enters UFC 330 on a five-fight winning streak, with victories over Polyana Viana, Michelle Waterson-Gomez, Luana Pinheiro, Marina Rodriguez and Amanda Lemos. Her latest win over Lemos came by unanimous decision in March.

Robertson is also one of the most dangerous submission hunters women’s MMA has ever seen. She already owns the UFC women’s submission record, so calling her simply a wrestler undersells what she can do once she gets on top.

And there is one area where I actually favor Robertson: wrestling. Robertson may be able to stuff many of Dern’s takedown attempts and decide whether she wants to keep the fight standing or initiate the grappling herself. That gives the challenger an unusual amount of control over how this matchup develops.

The problem is what happens after she makes that decision. If Robertson keeps it standing, I favor Dern’s power and boxing over five rounds. If Robertson wrestles, she is willingly entering Dern’s best area.

Robertson could absolutely have success from top position. Ground-and-pound is particularly interesting because Dern has been hurt and controlled from underneath in MMA before. Jiu-jitsu becomes a different game when someone is dropping elbows and punches into your face.

But Robertson would need to remain positionally disciplined for a long time. One mistake against Dern could completely change the fight.

Can Robertson survive Dern’s guard for 25 minutes?

This is what the entire prediction comes down to for me. Robertson doesn’t need to out-grapple Dern in a pure BJJ match. She needs to use wrestling, maintain top position, land damage and avoid giving Dern opportunities to sweep or attack submissions.

For a round or two, I can see it happening. Over 25 minutes, I don’t trust it. Dern is simply too dangerous from positions where most fighters would consider themselves to be losing. A Robertson takedown could actually become the beginning of Dern’s best offensive sequence.

And Robertson appears willing to test that area. She is also not the most disciplined fighter. She might get tagged and then go for a clumsy takedown.

That makes this fight particularly intriguing because the challenger may willingly walk directly into the champion’s biggest strength. If Robertson can consistently land takedowns, stay safe and punish Dern with ground-and-pound, the upset becomes very realistic. I just don’t think she can do it for five rounds.

Dern vs. Robertson prediction

I expect Robertson to have her moments. She should be able to land takedowns, and I wouldn’t be surprised if she spends significant stretches controlling Dern from top position early. Her wrestling could make the first couple of rounds much more competitive than the odds suggest.

But every additional grappling exchange gives Dern another opportunity. Eventually, I think she finds it. Dern has the more dangerous guard, the better submission game and, in my opinion, the advantage on the feet as well. Robertson’s wrestling is the one major area where I favor the challenger, but that advantage repeatedly puts her into a position where a single mistake could end the fight.

I’m backing Dern to retain her title by submission.

Best bets

  • Mackenzie Dern ML: The safest option. Dern has more ways to win and should have an advantage both standing and in extended grappling exchanges.
  • Dern by submission: The more aggressive play. Robertson’s willingness to wrestle could give Dern plenty of opportunities to attack from her back or after a reversal.
