Abubakar Vagaev vs. Saygid Izagakhmaev prediction: Does the short-notice switch favor Vagaev?

Abubakar Vagaev vs. Saygid Izagakhmaev prediction: Does the short-notice switch favor Vagaev?
Abubakar Vagaev vs. Saygid Izagakhmaev

Originally, Abubakar Vagaev was supposed to face Magomedrasul Gasanov before Saygid Izagakhmaev accepted the fight on short notice. That change matters. Vagaev has enjoyed a full training camp, while Saygid Izagakhmaev steps in after already dropping a competitive UFC debut against Nicolas Dalby. The more I watched both fighters, the more I kept coming back to one thing: Cardio. Here is my full Abubakar Vagaev vs. Saygid Izagakhmaev prediction.

This might be one of the hardest fights to predict on the entire Abu Dhabi card. Two accomplished Russian grapplers, and both come from elite training camps. They are both comfortable wrestling for fifteen minutes. On paper, it looks like a high-level chess match where every scramble could decide the outcome, but more likely, it will be a stand-up affair with the wrestling cancelling eachother out.

Abubakar Vagaev vs. Saygid Izagakhmaev odds: Does the short-notice replacement explain the line?

Abubakar Vagaev -275 (1.36) | Saygid Izagakhmaev +225 (3.25)

UFC betting sites have made Vagaev a solid favorite, and I think the biggest reason is preparation. Vagaev enters the UFC on a three-fight winning streak as a former ACA welterweight champion, while Izagakhmaev accepted the fight on short notice after losing a split decision to Nicolas Dalby in his promotional debut. This is probably the only reason for the high odds on Saygid Izagakhmaev.

Both men are excellent wrestlers, but Vagaev has consistently shown he can maintain a relentless pace over five rounds. That’s a major advantage in a matchup where the grappling could largely cancel itself out.

Can Izagakhmaev make the grappling advantage count?

Izagakhmaev is a dangerous fighter. Training alongside Khabib Nurmagomedov and Islam Makhachev has shaped his entire game. He’s an excellent scrambler, attacks submissions aggressively and constantly looks to take the back whenever opportunities present themselves.

We saw flashes of that against Nicolas Dalby. The problem was what happened later in the fight. As the minutes went on, Dalby gradually took over, and Izagakhmaev’s pace noticeably slowed. Whether that was Octagon nerves, ring rust after a lengthy layoff, or simply a cardio issue remains unclear. Nicolas Dalby is a respected veteran, but hardly a world beater at this stage of his career, so this loss does not look good on Izagakhmaev’s record.

Why Vagaev’s pace stands out

Vagaev’s record might suggest he’s a decision fighter, but I actually think that undersells his style. He’s constantly working. He pressures forward, mixes striking with takedowns, lands meaningful ground-and-pound and forces opponents to repeatedly defend wrestling exchanges. Even when fighters work back to their feet, Vagaev is often right back on their hips looking for another takedown.

He’s not the biggest puncher at welterweight, but he’s explosive enough to make opponents respect his striking before changing levels. And while most wins on his record have come by decision, he never seems to slow down.

Why I think the grappling cancels out

Normally, wrestling-heavy matchups come down to who controls the mat. I’m not convinced either man dominates there. Both are excellent grapplers. Both have quality submission games. Both understand positional wrestling at a high level.

That leads me to believe we’ll see plenty of scrambles, reversals and prolonged clinch exchanges rather than one-sided control. If that’s the case, I trust Vagaev’s conditioning slightly more.

Vagaev vs. Izagakhmaev prediction

This is not a fight I’d bet heavily, at least not on the winner. There are simply too many unknowns. We haven’t seen Vagaev compete inside the UFC yet, while Izagakhmaev is still trying to prove his ONE Championship success translates consistently to the Octagon.

I expect a competitive fight with momentum swings throughout. Ultimately, though, I think Vagaev’s superior gas tank, consistent output and full training camp allow him to edge a very close decision. It might even be a split decisions.
