Every rising contender eventually reaches a crossroads. For Quillan Salkilld, that moment arrives this weekend in the UFC Apex when he meets former KSW champion Mateusz Gamrot in his first UFC main event. Here is my full Mateusz Gamrot vs. Quillan Salkilld prediction.
What is at stake for each fighter?
The Australian has blasted through the lightweight rankings with highlight-reel finishes, but none of his previous opponents have presented the kind of challenge Gamrot does. The biggest question isn’t whether Salkilld can strike with Gamrot. We already know he can. The real question is this: how will Salkilld deal with his first truly elite grappler?
Gamrot has built a reputation as one of the division’s biggest nightmare matchups. His relentless chain wrestling has frustrated contenders for years, and more than one promising prospect has seen their momentum come to a screeching halt after facing the Polish veteran. Salkilld, however, called for this fight himself. Now he’ll have the chance to prove he belongs among the lightweight elite.

Mateusz Gamrot vs. Quillan Salkilld odds
Mateusz Gamrot +130 (2.30) | Quillan Salkilld -155 (1.65)
UFC oddsmakers initially couldn’t separate the two, opening the fight as a pick’em before money quickly poured in on Salkilld.
The move reflects everything we’ve seen from the Australian over the past eighteen months. He’s younger, longer, more explosive, and enters the fight riding enormous momentum after dismantling former title challenger Beneil Dariush in the opening round.
Still, backing against Gamrot has rarely been comfortable. While some fans view him as a gatekeeper, that’s selling him short. Gamrot isn’t simply keeping contenders out of the rankings—he’s become one of the UFC’s premier prospect killers. His style forces opponents into uncomfortable fights, drains their gas tanks, and exposes holes that often aren’t visible until they’re trapped beneath him.
The UFC betting market clearly believes Salkilld has the skills to pass that test. Whether he’s ready for five rounds against one of the sport’s most relentless wrestlers remains the biggest unknown.

How Mateusz Gamrot can grapple his way to victory
Everyone knows what’s coming. The problem is stopping it. Gamrot doesn’t rely on one perfect takedown. He overwhelms opponents with constant pressure, chaining together singles, doubles and body locks until they finally break. Even elite defensive wrestlers eventually find themselves fighting off takedown attempts every few seconds.
His recent submission victory over Esteban Ribovics served as a reminder that he remains one of the lightweight division’s elite grapplers. Rather than simply controlling position, Gamrot mixed in damaging ground-and-pound before securing the finish, producing arguably his best UFC performance to date.
Experience is another major advantage. Gamrot has shared the Octagon with Charles Oliveira, Arman Tsarukyan, Dan Hooker, Rafael dos Anjos, Rafael Fiziev, Beneil Dariush and Jalin Turner. He’s competed in five-round fights and knows exactly how to pace himself across twenty-five minutes.
Salkilld has never dealt with someone capable of wrestling at this level for this long. Gamrot doesn’t need early success. He simply needs to keep asking the same question until his opponent runs out of answers. If he repeatedly forces Salkilld into exhausting scrambles and keeps him pinned against the fence, the Australian’s striking advantages become increasingly difficult to use.
Why I believe Quillan Salkilld wins
Salkilld looks like the complete package. The Australian possesses legitimate knockout power, sharp boxing fundamentals, dangerous kicks and a rapidly improving submission game. More importantly, he has shown that he can adapt his style depending on the opponent standing across from him.
His UFC run has been nothing short of spectacular. He flattened Anshul Jubli in just 19 seconds, comfortably outworked Yanal Ashmouz, knocked out Nasrat Haqparast with one of the year’s best head kicks, submitted Jamie Mullarkey, and then announced himself as a genuine contender by stopping Beneil Dariush in the opening round. Yet this fight asks an entirely different question. None of those opponents wrestle like Mateusz Gamrot.
Salkilld owns a five-inch reach advantage and should enjoy a sizeable edge on the feet. His jab is crisp, his body work is excellent, and his kicking game gives opponents problems at every range. If he can establish that distance early, he’ll force Gamrot to shoot from further away than usual, making each takedown attempt more difficult.
Perhaps the most encouraging sign is Salkilld’s confidence. He wasn’t handed this matchup. He ASKED asked for it!
That tells you he believes his wrestling, scrambling and cardio are ready for one of the toughest stylistic tests in the entire division. Whether that confidence proves justified is what makes this main event so compelling.
Keys to victory
Mateusz Gamrot
- Turn it into a wrestling match. Gamrot’s biggest advantage comes from forcing Salkilld to defend takedown after takedown until the striking becomes irrelevant.
- Pressure without giving space. The smaller Apex Octagon favors Gamrot’s relentless style. Back Salkilld to the fence and deny him room to establish his jab.
- Test the prospect’s gas tank. This is Salkilld’s first UFC main event. If Gamrot can drag him into the championship rounds, experience could become the deciding factor.
Quillan Salkilld
- Punish every level change. Uppercuts, knees and straight punches down the middle are his best weapons against Gamrot’s entries.
- Defend the first takedown and scramble immediately. Staying underneath Gamrot is a losing proposition. Every scramble back to the feet is a small victory.
- Invest in the body. Gamrot’s cardio is legendary, but consistent body work can slow even the best pressure wrestlers over 25 minutes.
Mateusz Gamrot vs. Quillan Salkilld prediction
This is exactly the kind of fight that tells us whether a prospect is ready for championship contention. We’ve seen plenty of exciting young lightweights build hype with spectacular finishes. Then they run into Mateusz Gamrot, spend 15 or 25 minutes defending takedowns, and suddenly everyone forgets how dangerous they looked.
That’s why this fight is so fascinating. The biggest question isn’t whether Salkilld has better striking than Gamrot. He does. The question is whether he can maintain that striking advantage while defending one of the most relentless grapplers in mixed martial arts.
Gamrot doesn’t simply shoot one takedown and hold you down. He forces constant decisions. Defend the single, defend the double, fight the body lock, scramble back to your feet, then do it all over again. Very few lightweights have consistently solved that puzzle.
Salkilld may be one of them. What has impressed me most throughout his UFC run isn’t the finishes—it’s how composed he remains under pressure. He doesn’t panic in scrambles, he manages distance exceptionally well, and every appearance has shown noticeable improvements in both his wrestling and overall fight IQ.
The five-inch reach advantage also shouldn’t be overlooked. If Salkilld can consistently establish his jab, attack Gamrot’s body and punish entries with knees and uppercuts, he’ll force the veteran to work much harder than usual just to reach the clinch.
I don’t expect Gamrot to dominate the wrestling, but I do expect him to land takedowns. The difference is that I don’t think he’ll control Salkilld long enough to bank clear rounds. The Australian has shown excellent scrambling ability, and I believe he’ll repeatedly work back to his feet before Gamrot can accumulate meaningful control time.
As the fight progresses, Salkilld’s cleaner boxing and heavier shots should become increasingly noticeable. Gamrot will have his moments. He’ll secure takedowns, push Salkilld against the fence and remind everyone why he’s one of the division’s most frustrating opponents. But I think this is the moment Salkilld answers the biggest question surrounding his rise.
Gamrot vs. Salkilld prediction: Quillan Salkilld defeats Mateusz Gamrot via unanimous decision.
